Last Friday, Elly and I road tripped back up to San Francisco. We started driving (and by we, I mean Elly) from LA at 5 PM and went for about an hour in slight traffic. Then we got clear of LA and went another hour with girl talking and Korean master mixes and my feet up on the dashboard and probably flashing anyone who looked too closely. I am a bad passenger and if I ever get into an accident, I will be screwed. And then ticketed for indecent exposure.
Elly is driving.
Around 7 PM we stopped at an In-n-Out in…Lebec, which according to Mapquest, is a destination that we were supposed to have reached in a little over an hour. Then we played the fun let’s-count-how-many-Asians-we-see game. Nine, including the two of us. Four of them were in a family. And the rest were the girlfriends of white boys. Hmmm…
Also there was a fail moment when one of the boys (from the family of four) walked in and I said in a really loud whisper (I THINK THAT IS PAUL JISUNG KIM) and Elly asked me if I knew him and I looked at her like she was crazy for not knowing a Youtube star. Then he turned his head and it was not Paul Jisung Kim and I was sad. Oh so sad because I had already begun formulating ways in which I would cleverly and non-awkwardly approach him for a picture. Lebec, you disappoint me.
This is a bug-splattered windshield.
Then we got lost. Of course. We ended up having to drive super sketchily in a rectangle around a field (I kid you not, a FIELD). According to Elly’s GPS system TomasinaTomasina, this was the best way to reach the freeway again…to trespass on some random farmer’s land. Also, the TomTom is amazing because it’s basically a British lady telling us directions (Bryan!). When she says “sharp left,” it sounds more like she’s promoting some illegal activities.
This is super flat land aka Mid-Cal.
There was more driving, which I don’t remember because I passed out from food-induced coma, but I woke up to Elly saying that we should pull up to a gas station to take a nap. We both fell asleep in our seats for 25 minutes and woke up at 9 PM. She went to fill up the gas tank and I went to do what I do best. Squeegeee. I always feel like the passengers should be squeegee’ing if the driver is getting gas. That, and I really like cleaning the windows. It’s so neat! All the dust gets cleaned off and then you use the end to wipe off the water droplets. It makes me happy.
Here is the little cloud that I thought resembled a helicopter.
We skipped to the market and Elly bought her 5 Hour energy drink and me a Frapp and we were on our way again. According to the GPS, we were at Lost Hills, which is a pretty unfortunate name for a town. Then we powerhour’d for a long time (I promise my eyes closed only a few times and not even for long) and then were in Mid-Cal and smelling the cows. Seriously, there was a field of cows. Elly said she smelled sulfur but I really do think it was the cow emissions.
Next thing I knew we were back on the Bay Bridge and paying the toll and then bright lights and the Financial District and then home. Happy home.
The view from the Bay Bridge.
WITH SO MUCH FOOD I THINK MY MOTHER IS TRYING TO KILL ME. But that is for another time.
Also, I thought that I would get nauseous or be passed out most of the trip (thanks, Steven and Palina for the non-sleeping the night before) but it was funsies! I am road-trip approved!
First off, YAY I got a shoutout!
Nice pictures! I like the bug splat one. And when I read the squeegee thing, it made me laugh out loud. I don’t know why.
It just sounded really silly I suppose.
Looks like you had fun. 🙂
